This morning at 1.30am after Daniel had thrown up in his bed. After he had been brought into my bed and done the same thing and after a couple of bouts during the late afternoon. I decided that he was suppose to be drinking lots and probably wasnt keeping any of it down. I became concerned again about him getting dehydrated and he was also bringing up blood.

So I got rang my wonderful next door neighbours, they didnt answer. So I then got Billy up and went next door with him and asked them if they could possibly have Billy for the night and what my concerns about Daniel were. Bless them, they were only to happy to help me and later (this morning) were only concerned about Daniel and werent worried at all about the fact that I dumped Billy there in the middle of the night. I must add I didnt want to take Billy with me as sometimes after hours doctors can take forever to see you. However, I couldnt leave Billy here could I?

Anyway then I took Daniel to the after hours doctors. There we were seen by a lovely, helpful, friendly nurse. She explained to me about the fact that the reason that Daniel was throwing up and couldnt keep the water down and was bringing up brown blood was that his poor wee stomach couldnt handle the amount of water he wanted to drink. She explained and taught me how to give him a few sips wait 10 minutes then repeat again. While we were waiting to see if he’d keep the water down her way we chatted. She has 3 children with a 8 year gap between her youngest and her 2nd one. I enjoy meeting women like me with big gaps in their families. I find having a big gap almost like starting again you tend to be more relaxed than the first time but also forget some of the things you learnt the first time round. She also showed me that he wasnt dehydrated as his mouth still had saliva in it and although his eyes were a bit sunken the fact that he was still having plenty of wet nappies meant he was ok. I said I felt silly because I was making him sick by over watering him. She said I didnt know and that I was only trying to be a good mum.

As we were walking out of the consultation room and towards the front door she patted me on the back and said it was lovely to see a wonderful mother who cared about her children and was doing a really good job. She said it was nice cause you dont always see that.

We had a bit of a rough night as Daniel was still thirsty but at least he was keeping it down doing it Stephanie’s way.

We had to sleep on the couches too as the bed and cot were wet. However, I learnt something and want to share this fact with you all. If your child has a gastro bug and the doctor says give them plenty of water to drink do it wisely, the way I learnt in the early hours of this morning:-

sip, sip, sip WAIT 10 minutes sip, sip, sip WAIT 10 minutes sip, sip, sip WAIT 10 minutes sip, sip, sip . . .

  7. I am one of the first people that tells parents to do the sipping thing. It is exhausting for the parent and the child, but it does keep the liquids down.

I highly reccomend Pedialyte it is wonderful.

Hope he feels better real soon.

Thanks for stopping by my Monday Memory. I noted that I’m not familiar with the open and closed terms–may be different groups with similar names.

  11. Jen–Thanks for stopping by my blog–

I hope Daniel is better now. It’s so hard to see tiny ones feeling terrible–it’s easier to have it yourself!

  12. Hi Jen,
I wanted to say hello and thank you for visiting my blog.

Over the years, my daughter (who turns 11 today!!) has had many a bout with stomach viruses. She was actually hospitalized twice with them, so I can sympathize with you! I pray your little one recovers quickly and is already feeling better.

  15. I know the night had to be exhausting for all of you. And I always say a prayer of thanksgiving when I hear of a nurse who has the bedside manner of Stephanie. When mothers are worried about their children while they are sick, it is good to have a healthcare professional who takes the time out to encourage and comfort Mom. And Stephanie is right. You are a wonderful Mom, Jenn. Daniel is in my prayers for a quick healing! And a special blessing to your neighbors for being so supportive and understanding, by taking care of Billy while you were at the doctors office.
Hope your day is a good one Jenn.

  16. Sorry to hear you have been unwell. It sure makes it hard when the whole family is unwell with gastro. Never a fun thing to have. My family and I had it last year, and it was most unpleasant! Hope you all get to feeling better real soon!

  17. We call that bug “Rotovirus”, its very easy to catch and quite common amongst kids. My daughter had it when she was only 2, it was awful to see her in such a state. Hope your “pumpkin” is well again soon 🙂
