Banning fireworks

responsible and this would be a safe time of the year. It wasnt, in fact, it was the worst in 10 years. The fire service was rushed off its feet and it seems that despite the safety campaigns the fires related to fireworks are growing in number over the years rather than decreasing. In Palmerston North someone even managed to accidently start a fire in a bedroom of a house with a firework. Its not only the fire-service that are busy The Police report that some irresponsible people are making bombs out of fireworks too. People have to use their common sense and obey rules put in place for the safety of themselves and other people. This however, isnt happening and in the wrong hands fireworks can seriously harm or kill!!!

On Saturday night at our get together it was even discussed as to whether we need to celebrate this event at all and if this is what happens one wonders whether it would be better to forgo this event altogether.

As recently as last night a 13 year old lost his life after watching fireworks. So young, so sad.

Its not only people that are effected by this event. I went over to Muzz’s place this morning and Mum was telling me about Muzz’s sister who opened her door to a dog last night. The dog was scared and trying to find somewhere to hide. It managed to get in my SIL’s house and decided to lie on her couch. Which of course my SIL told it, it couldnt do. She rang the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who told her they couldnt help her as they had no room for dogs. This morning she hoped it would find its way home. It wasnt the only distressed animal either.

While we are discussing what Mum said she also told me it sounded like a warzone outside their house. She said it sounded like people were throwing fireworks at their house. This did nothing to help their own little dog who insisted upon sleeping right between Mum and Dad at the top of their bed instead of by Mum’s feet. So while Napier police reported on the incidents that happened in that part of the Bay and that Hastings was quiter we wonder which part of Hastings they were talking about.

What do u think question-mark.gif

  1. I totally agree with the Police and Fire Service, they cost money and it should be spent on something that is safe but fireworks is a killer and also I heard that people who fought in the wars still have fears with the fireworks going off especially in the old folks homes the ones who fought in the war are scared thinking they where back in the war, I can understand that.

Animals need protection as well after all they protect us when needed especially dogs, and look what do we do, we scare them completely, do the animals think we are that mean, and also the idiots who throw firework sin homes with a window is opened a bit causes fires and loss of a home to those people, who’s going to pay for the fire service bill and also are they going to help pay for a new home the culprits (Nope) they are gone laughing think its a great joke, but its different when their own home is burnt down by fireworks.

and who is going to suffer when a hand or face is blown by fireworks or lose a limb……

  2. Fireworks are banned here (except for where there has been asked permission for and it has to be in a big open space, away from houses)
Last night was the first time in YEARS that I didn’t hear one single firework going off

  3. I wish they were banned here. It was pretty quiet up here – no call outs whatsoever but yeah I’d feel alot more at least if there were only public displays.

  4. Sounds sensible to me–but I live in Columbus, OH, USA. I’m all for safety.

Stopped by to see if you had an MM. Mine’s up.

  5. I hate fireworks – The animals really suffer when they start with that rubbish! I think that is something that should be banned world wide!

In case I don’t make it round here tomorrow – Happy Birthday to Daniel!!!!!! (it is the 7th?)

  6. Hello Jen!
I am here on my own, visiting your site.
Fireworks used to be very fun, but it seems as though the longer people have had access to them, the more stupid people have gotten or that they just couldn’t careless about who it hurts or what it destroys.
Here in Colorado, all the really fun fireworks have been banned and are illegal. These are the ones that explode or blasts off and flies off from the spot that they were lit.
People still go out of state to get them, but if they are caught with any of the illegal ones, it is bad for them. Many fires have been started here, as well as kids hands getting practically blown off.
This year in July, I kept my dogs in and as long as I didn’t respond to the sounds, they seemed to be okay. I let them out once and they barked alot.. nothing unusual about that, but the next day i went into the yard, and my yard was full of the rockets that were supposedly illegal.
I am just glad to say that it was wet enough in my yard that none of them caught fire to the house!
Anyway, you asked me if my name was Jennifer and it is! I haven’t met anyone who uses Jen for Jeannette, although I can see why you can!
Well I had better get back to work now, but I did want to stop in and give you a shout out!

  7. I agree that we should have a fireworks ban except for professional displays. Too many people get hurt, too many homes are destroyed, too much smoke and debris! Not a great way to start the new year!

  9. Why don’t people look after their dogs on Guy Fawkes?!? That really upsets me – They don’t know what’s going on and they rely on us!
