Phone

Yesterday morning Billy came into my bedroom and woke me up by asking me to dial into the phone, the number to retrieve the messages. We have an answer phone system provided by the phone company. One has to dial the special number and then we get to listen to the messages that the phone company has on their answering machine. I thought it was a bit strange as he is not usually that keen on the phone. Besides which I didn’t think we had any messages. One can tell as a light on our phone flashes when there is a message waiting to be heard. I dialed the number anyway and he went off happily to listen to the message. I was still half asleep so I decided Id listen later.

After a while he came back and asked me to listen so I did. The rascal had recorded a message. My suspicions were confirmed. He had been up to something. A funny something. The recording was of the toilet flushing and then him pretending to blow off. The reason he’d wanted to have the phone was so he could listen to what he’d prerecorded. He has just learnt his phone number at school. What with his dyspraxia and dyslexia this has taken some time to learn. We have tried at home without success. So I was kind of OK with him using the phone in this way. He was after all practising what he’d learnt.

Later after dropping him at school I found the television on. He’d been asked to turn it off as we had left the house. The reason he hadn’t is that he’d recorded the children’s programmes that are on the TV after he goes to school. He had piled up some wooden blocks by the TV and sat the phone upright on top of them. The phone had recorded 75 minutes worth of TV as I hadn’t come home. As you may recall I dropped Daniel off with Muzz for the day (see the previous post).

I remember as a child playing with our phone with my sister. My mother had a part-time job after school. We were of an age where we were able to be at home without her for some time. My sister and I would make pranks calls. We knew it was wrong but it was fun and we would egg each other on.

With this in mind I did wonder whether Billy playing with the phone was really a good idea. So yesterday as I was cleaning up the spare room I found an old tape recorder tape and gave it to him after school yesterday. He played around with it yesterday afternoon. This morning when I got up and went into the lounge he asked me to be quiet. He was recording the TV again only this time with the tape and the tape deck. A much better plan I thought than the phone.
